Cancer and zen: excerpt from upcoming book Today Cancer, Tomorrow The World

February 20, 2013

Cancer is the ultimate zen master. There are people who want to achieve enlightenment and “live in the moment to appreciate every aspect of life through actualizing the awakening of everything’s wholeness and inter-connectedness by losing their attachment to who they are so they can bear witness to life around them and become it.”

As I watch chemo seem to precipitate in the drip chamber of an iv-tube, I know a gyre of cancer is “actualizing the awakening” of a tumor into the “wholeness” of a malignant burl “living in a moment of inter-connectedness” to my cells and I’ve lost my attachment to who I am but I don’t want to become it.

When you have cancer, zen is assisted-living for the healthy.
