The best way to find a job

October 30, 2010

When you’re unemployed, you usually spend time in gyms, bars, taking adult education classes, or on the phone bitching to other laid off co-workers or hearing the gossip about the bosses from friends who still work at their old office, or computer talking to other people who don’t have work.

The people who say these things: “It could turn out to be the best thing that ever happened…things happened for a reason…etc.” Have one thing in common: they have jobs. If they didn’t have jobs, they wouldn’t say these stupid things. Their worst phrase is: “Things happen for a reason.” Yeah, the reason is some people just plain suck.

My advice, which I have followed reluctantly, is the best thing to do is land any kind of part-time job, because the best way to find work is hanging out with people who are working. It can be anything menial, but people who have better jobs need the services of menial people, and most people of quality recognize quality in others.

I’m not saying it’s easy. it’s humbling, but once you get over yourself, it’s not such a big deal.
